What made you decide to pursue your degree as an adult?

After starting my job at the Economic Development Corporation, I developed a strong passion for economic development and aimed to advance in my role. My boss mentioned that earning my bachelor’s degree would be beneficial if I wanted to pursue a leadership position in the future.

Why did you choose to study at Tiffin University?

I previously attended Terra State Community College and was familiar with the DragonNext Program. Going to Tiffin was an easy choice because it’s close to home, used all my previous college credits, and is so affordable!

Describe your experience with the program so far.

I was feeling anxious about returning to school, especially in an online format. I work full-time and have a family to take care of at home. However, I have been pleasantly surprised at how easy it has been to add school to the mix. This is all thanks to the faculty and staff at Tiffin University. They are so understanding and have set up the classes to accommodate people who are in the same position as me in life without sacrificing the quality of education.

I was also surprised at how much of the course content I would encounter while working. I always think, “Huh, I just learned about that in class last week!” It made me feel a lot more prepared for my job.

The professors always do weekly check-ins in each of our classes and are always accessible if I ever have questions about the course. I’m surrounded by a wonderful mix of individuals in each of my classes. We come from diverse backgrounds and have unique experiences, yet we are united by our shared decision to pursue education while juggling various aspects of our lives.

How are you juggling work, life and going back to school? Any tips?

You really have to set your mind to it and make school a priority. However, you also need to know your limits and set realistic goals for yourself.

Prioritizing school has always been a struggle for me, but now that school aligns with my career goals, it makes perfect sense for me to earn my BBA! Tiffin makes it so easy to do this with the 7-week courses and online format. I am able to set time aside each night to work on schoolwork after my little one has gone to bed, so I haven’t had to sacrifice much time with my family. I also had to be honest with myself, which meant only going to school at half-time instead of full-time. My advisor has done a fantastic job of helping me figure out an academic plan that helps me balance work, family, and school.

I am very lucky to have a wonderful support system. My husband has been so supportive of my journey and will take care of things at home if I need to make more time for school. Also, my boss gave me the nudge I needed to sign up for classes!

What keeps you motivated to stay in the program?

Knowing that I’m so close to graduation and how I’ll be able to progress in my career!

What advice would you give to a prospective student who is thinking about going back to school?

If the opportunity presents itself, go for it! Education is much more accessible than you think.

TU’s motto is: Without risk there is no gain. Can you tell us about a time when you took a risk and what you gained from it?

Taking a leap of faith from my previous job to my current position at the SCEDC has been incredibly rewarding. I’ve had the opportunity to become more engaged with the community and expand my expertise in economic development. This role has surpassed my expectations, and I am truly grateful for the opportunity.
