Alumni Spotlight: Harold Green III, MH Creative Writing ’18

harold green III

Current occupation: Writer

What made you decide to pursue your degree as an adult?

I wanted to be an example for my sons. I wanted them to be inspired to move with purpose in this world.

Why did you choose to study at Tiffin University?

After researching numerous Masters programs for Creative Writing, Tiffin checked a lot of boxes for me, including pricing and remote learning options.

Describe your experience with the program, your cohort and faculty?

There weren’t many surprises for me and I do believe the technology was easy to use. I had very healthy interactions with faculty, some were even heartwarming in the admiration they showed for my work. The interactions I had with my cohort were so great. I loved getting to know their stories, watching them grow as writers and seeing their confidence bloom as the program moved forward.

How did you juggle work, life, and going back to school? Any tips?

It was surely difficult, as I was juggling a lot of things at the time, but I don’t shy away from hard work. I knew what it would be going in and I just thought about my family any time things got rough and that was all the inspiration I needed to push through.

What kept you motivated to stay in the program?

How proud my family would be of me, and how proud I would be of myself for seeing a goal through.

What advice would you give to a prospective student who is thinking about going back to school?

If it is something you have been seriously considering, see it through!

TU’s motto is: Without risk there is no gain. Can you tell us about a time when you took a risk and what you gained from it?

After working in the Chicago Public School system for 11 years, I left my job to pursue my arts career full time (in the middle of finishing this degree) and since then, I have published five books, with some of the world’s top publishing houses, and I have had innumerable career successes. I am very proud of the gains from my risk!
