TU student spotlight Audra Sennish

Current occupation:

Graduate Assistant to the Office of the President / WTTF Assistant / Gigging Musician / Barista at The Dragon Brew

What made you decide to pursue your degree as an adult?

I’ve always known that if the opportunity to pursue a master’s degree came my way, I wouldn’t be able to pass it up. I have a genuine passion for learning and a strong desire to deepen my knowledge in the areas that excite me. That chance presented itself when Ellen Lucius, the Executive Assistant to President Schumacher, was seeking a Graduate Assistant. Having thoroughly enjoyed my undergraduate experience at Tiffin University, I knew this was a perfect opportunity—not only to further my education by pursuing an MBA but also to gain valuable insight into the university’s operations. Starting my MBA program immediately after earning my two BA degrees in April 2023 felt like the ideal way to open up even more career opportunities post-graduation.

Why did you choose to study at Tiffin University?

I chose to begin my academic journey at Tiffin University in March 2019, initially majoring in Strategic & Mass Communication. As I explored my passion for music further, I decided to add a second major in Commercial Music. My undergraduate experience at TU was incredibly rewarding, and I’m deeply grateful for the opportunities it provided me. Because of that, it was an easy decision to continue my education by pursuing my MBA at TU as well.

Describe your experience with the program so far.

I was initially quite anxious about starting the MBA program. While my communication and music courses provided some foundational business knowledge, I had no prior experience in the field and worried I might struggle to keep up. However, the MBA program is designed to welcome students from diverse academic backgrounds, which eased my concerns. To strengthen my business foundation, I enrolled in MGT515 and MGT516, which proved invaluable in helping me tackle the more advanced courses in the curriculum. Now, with only two courses left, I feel much more confident in my marketing and business skills.

I was initially concerned that being in a fully online MBA program might limit the meaningful interactions I could have with my professors. However, that hasn’t been the case at all. My professors have been incredibly accommodating and genuinely invested in their students’ success. Whenever I have questions, they provide thorough answers, and when I request additional feedback on my assignments, they always take the time to offer it. The connections I’ve built with my professors have been invaluable, and I’m confident these relationships will continue to benefit me long after graduation.

How are you juggling work, life and going back to school? Any tips?

My situation is quite unique. In addition to being the Graduate Assistant to the Office of the President, I’ve also been juggling 4-5 part-time jobs. Some days, I’m a barista at The Dragon Brew on TU’s campus, while other days, I work as an Assistant and On-Air Talent for WTTF, Seneca County’s #1 radio station. On weekends, I perform as a gigging musician in a cover duo with my colleague, Evan Watt. I wear many different hats, but I’m incredibly grateful to pursue my diverse passions. At times, it can feel overwhelming, and I’ve definitely questioned why I take on so much.

But the sense of accomplishment and fulfillment I get from hard work keeps me going. There’s nothing more rewarding than hearing that your efforts are recognized and appreciated. I do all of this to show others that they can achieve anything they set their mind to if they’re willing to put in the effort. If you’re worried about balancing multiple responsibilities, just remember to carve out time for yourself. I really value my alone time—it’s crucial when life feels non-stop. Surrounding yourself with supportive people who lift you up is equally important; they make the journey all the more worthwhile.

What keeps you motivated to stay in the program?

I remind myself that with every assignment I submit, I’m one step closer to becoming a better version of myself. That’s what keeps me motivated. If you focus on the fact that you’re in your program to grow and improve for your own sake—not to please others—it will naturally enhance your work ethic and mindset.

What advice would you give to a prospective student who is thinking about going back to school?

I chose to pursue my MBA immediately after finishing my BA degrees because I knew it would be easier to keep the momentum going while I was still in school. I realized that later in life, it might be harder to find the motivation to return. But if you’re someone going back to school later, just remember that the effort you put in now will pay off in the long run. There will be nights when the workload feels overwhelming, but in the end, you’ll be grateful for those late nights spent improving your knowledge. As I mentioned before, keeping a mindset focused on self-improvement will help motivate you not only to return to school but also to stay committed throughout the journey.

TU’s motto is: Without risk there is no gain. Can you tell us about a time when you took a risk and what you gained from it?

My time at TU has been defined by taking risks. When I first started college, I took a major risk by auditioning for the musical Spring Awakening. I didn’t want anyone to know I could sing because I was afraid of being judged. But instead of facing rejection, the music department encouraged me to pursue my passion further, eventually leading me to major in Commercial Music. Taking that risk opened the door to countless opportunities that have helped me grow both personally and professionally. Staying in school after graduating in 2023 was another risk—I was delaying the start of my full-time career. But rather than seeing it as a setback, I realized it was an opportunity to strengthen myself and pursue multiple passions simultaneously. That “risk” has given me a fresh perspective and a renewed drive for success.
