Embarking on a doctoral program often raises many questions about residencies and applied research projects. At Tiffin University, we prioritize ensuring our students fully understand the degree program requirements before starting classes. To demystify the residency and applied project requirements for our Doctor of Criminal Justice (DCJ), we’ve compiled the following information to provide clear answers to your questions.
How do I know if the pursuit of a Doctor of Criminal Justice is for me?
Interest in the process of obtaining a doctorate is something that is unique and generated within a potential student. Capacity is determined by the application process and after that, the student commitment and persistence is the final requirement to achieve the degree.
Why this doctorate program?
This program has been developed for the adult professional who requires flexibility and the non-traditional approach to curriculum delivery and completion. Faculty and staff are committed to the development and success of each student.
Do I have the time to balance my personal and professional commitments within Doctoral level study?
Each course is offered during an 7-week session and students need to budget 10-15 hours each week. Some courses may exceed this estimate while others may require less weekly commitment of time.
When could I anticipate completion of the degree?
Completion and final defense of a dissertation determines the final timing for graduation. A student should anticipate a 2-3 year commitment.
What are the application requirements?
INFORMATION NEEDED FOR APPLICATION:
- Official Master’s Transcript: Submit an official transcript from an accredited institution where you completed your master’s degree.
- Admissions Essay/Statement of Purpose: Provide a detailed essay (1500 words) outlining your professional experience, career goals, and reasons for pursuing the Doctorate in Criminal Justice at Tiffin University.
- Professional Resume or CV: Include a current resume or CV that highlights your professional experience, education, and relevant accomplishments.
- Minimum of 3 Professional Letters of Recommendation: Submit at least three letters of recommendation from professionals who can speak to your qualifications, leadership potential, and readiness for doctoral-level work.

Is standardized testing required during the application process?
While a GRE/MAT or GMAT test is not required, the program reserved the right to request this as part of the application process as needed.
How are the courses delivered?
Courses are offered within the online format (Moodle platform). Professors are available for synchronous meetings and students are allowed the flexibility to complete course requirements within their schedule.
Does the program have a residency requirement?
Students are required to attend annual three-day residencies on the Tiffin University campus as a degree requirement. Residencies feature keynote speakers, faculty networking, strategies for doctorate level coursework, research skills, and program completion elements.
What is the cost of the DCJ program?
Tuition is $860 per credit hour and students are responsible for travel and related costs for residency attendance.

- Members of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Ohio (AICUO)
- Members of the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges (OFIC)
- Member of the Ohio Association of Community Colleges (OACC)
Members of these groups will be awarded a discount of $150.00 for each credit hour in the Tiffin University Doctor of Criminal Justice program.
