What made you decide to pursue your degree as an adult?

I never really saw higher education being in the cards for me until after having my son. When he was born, I realized I wanted to do something meaningful not only to provide a better life for my family but also to be a role model to my son to show him that goals and aspirations can be achieved as long as you apply yourself.

Why did you choose to study at Tiffin University?

Tiffin University was best aligned with my needs and wants in a university being a full-time employee and a full-time parent. Plus, who wouldn’t want to be a Dragon?

Describe your experience with the program so far.

My experience with Tiffin University’s online psychology program has been nothing short of wonderful. When I first began studying, I was a little anxious when learning how to navigate Moodle simply because I had never really been part of a virtual learning environment, but with time it became second nature and is so easily navigated as I near the end of my academic journey with Tiffin.

All of the instructors I have had have for the most part been incredibly present and helpful, which is something I find admirable and makes me feel more connected to the learning environment. Likewise, my peers have been wonderful to interact with and have always been so respectful. It’s always a great experience to seek to understand the perspectives of your peers and that’s something I feel I have had an abundance of.

How are you juggling work, life and going back to school? Any tips?

There’s no doubt that juggling work, family, and school has been a challenge, but dedication and perseverance can take you far in that regard. If I could share any tips with someone nervous about handling all these things, I would just suggest taking things one day at a time and prioritizing mindfulness during this journey. It’s okay to rest and recharge when necessary. You can’t pour from an empty cup.

What keeps you motivated to stay in the program?

Knowing that obtaining my Bachelor’s degree is a stepping stone in a career that will allow me to apply my skills to improve the mental health and lives of other individuals is extremely inspiring and motivating.

What advice would you give to a prospective student who is thinking about going back to school?

Do it! Do it, even if your hands tremble, even if it scares you. It is never too late to prioritize your academic development, and there is so much to gain beyond a degree when enrolling in higher education.

TU’s motto is: Without risk there is no gain. Can you tell us about a time when you took a risk and what you gained from it?

My academic journey in and of itself is a risk that has allowed me to gain many valuable skills and experiences that I would otherwise have likely not had the chance to experience. I was a young mother who never even considered college after graduating high school until realizing my life needed something more, and even though I was scared and unsure that I could balance parenthood, employment, and academics, I dedicated myself to doing well and persevered. Because of that, I have had the opportunity to speak with people, immerse myself in unique experiences, refine my speech and writing skills, and develop cultural competence and empathy. Taking that one risk, even when I was still unsure, has contributed significantly to many incredible, positive self-development that I will forever be grateful for.
