Current occupation: Law Enforcement/Police Officer
What made you decide to pursue your degree as an adult?
After previously obtaining an associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, I had the desire to continue my journey in diversifying myself. I feel in modern law enforcement, higher education is a tool that can help build trust in confidence in the abilities of police officers.
Why did you choose to study at Tiffin University?
I chose Tiffin University because of their excellent online program that allows me to maintain my full time work schedule.
Describe your experience with the program so far.
The first week of any online course is always a bit nerve racking as you may be unfamiliar with a professor and their teaching style. The familiarity and structure of most online courses make the online experience very user friendly.
Describe your interactions with your cohort and faculty?
Overall, positive.
How are you juggling work, life, and going back to school? Any tips?
Each journey begins with one step. I work 40-50 hours per week and am a full time student. I firmly believe that if something matters to you enough; you will make the time for it.
What keeps you motivated to stay in the program?
A promise I made to my late grandfather that I would finish my bachelor’s degree. I luckily found my career before enrolling in Tiffin University. I hope to set an example for other members of my department that it is never too late to finish or start your education.
What advice would you give to a prospective student who is thinking about going back to school?
Determine if the decision makes sense for you. There is a lot of anxiety and pressure for young adults to go to college as the next step after high school. As a nursing student who dropped out at 19, I needed to find more about myself before committing to school. At 22, I made the decision to return for Criminal Justice. Now as a Business major set to graduate at 28 years old, I couldn’t be happier with my personal journey. Find out what your personal journey entails and do the proper research to make sure you are taking all the necessary steps to maximize your value!
TU’s motto is: Without risk there is no gain. Can you tell us about a time when you took a risk and what you gained from it?
I took a risk committing to a full time school schedule as a full time employee in a profession that is statistically very stressful. I never have done online courses before so I was unsure of how I was going to handle load management. Now as I prepare to graduate, I have maintained a GPA above 3.5 while still being a productive member of my department. What I gained from this risk was the belief in myself that I don’t need to sell myself short. I am confident in what I can handle moving forward.
